November is American Diabetes Month!

The American Optometric Association has dedicated this month to remind everyone living with diabetes that caring for your eyes is an important part of caring for your overall health!

More than 38 million Americans have diabetes, and every one of them is at risk for vision loss from diabetic retinopathy!

Diabetic retinopathy can be painless and develop without any visible symptoms or warning signs, which is why the AOA recommends a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year for everyone with diabetes.

If you or someone in your 'ohana is living with diabetes, here are a few simple ways to help protect your vision:

  • Keep up with your health routines and exercise to promote your overall health and wellbeing
  • Schedule a comprehensive  eye exam at least once a year, even if your vision seems fine
  • Keep your blood sugar under control, as better control can help to slow the onset and progression of diabetic retinopathy
  • Keep an eye on your blood pressure and cholesterol, since these conditions can raise your risk of diabetic retinopathy
  • Keep an eye out for floaters, blurred vision, or difficulty seeing at night and share these signs with Dr. Punzal

Once vision is lost to diabetic retinopathy, it often cannot be restored, so catching it early makes all the difference!

At Punzal Vision, we are here to help patients of all ages, from keiki to kupuna, to protect your vision and keep your eyes healthy for years to come!
