What Your Eyes Can Reveal About Your Overall Health

Punzal Vision offers eye examinations in Kauai to patients of all ages.

Most people think of an eye exam as regular maintenance of their eye health and vision!

However, our eyes can tell much more about our overall health than just what may be affecting our sight.

The eyes are the only place in the body where blood vessels can be viewed directly and non-invasively, making them a perfect window into the overall health of your body!

Punzal Vision is the premier optometrist on Kauai for all of your eye care needs!

Here are a few things that we can pick up on early, during a comprehensive eye exam:

Diabetes

One of the most common conditions detected during an eye exam is diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels in the retina and can show up in your eyes before you even know you have the disease.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure or hypertension leaves visible clues that show up in the tiny blood vessels of the retina. Changes in vessel width, bleeding, or unusual patterns can all signal that your blood pressure may need your attention!

High Cholesterol

A yellowish ring around the cornea or deposits in the retina can indicate elevated cholesterol levels, especially in younger patients where it may be less expected.

Thyroid Disease

Bulging eyes, lid retraction, or persistent dryness can be early signs of thyroid disorders like Graves' disease, and can be discovered in the eyes before other symptoms may appear in your body.

Neurological Conditions

Changes in your optic nerve, pupil response, or peripheral vision can point to conditions like multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, or even increased pressure in the cranium.

Your annual eye exam isn't just about monitoring your eye health or updating your prescription, it's one of the most valuable health screenings you can get!
