One of the most common conditions detected during an eye exam is diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels in the retina and can show up in your eyes before you even know you have the disease.
High blood pressure or hypertension leaves visible clues that show up in the tiny blood vessels of the retina. Changes in vessel width, bleeding, or unusual patterns can all signal that your blood pressure may need your attention!
A yellowish ring around the cornea or deposits in the retina can indicate elevated cholesterol levels, especially in younger patients where it may be less expected.
Bulging eyes, lid retraction, or persistent dryness can be early signs of thyroid disorders like Graves' disease, and can be discovered in the eyes before other symptoms may appear in your body.
Changes in your optic nerve, pupil response, or peripheral vision can point to conditions like multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, or even increased pressure in the cranium.
