Low Vision Awareness Month

February is Low Vision Awareness month!

The American Optometric Association uses this month to highlight and raise awareness for one of the more advanced forms of visual impairment.

Low vision is a significant impairment to vision that in most cases can't be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery.

Low vision is commonly caused by conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts (when surgery isn't an option). While low vision can affect people of any age, it tends to be more prevalent in older adults.

Low vision is not the same as blindness, as people with low vision still have some ability to see, although objects can be difficult to detect, colors hard to distinguish, and simple daily tasks such as reading, driving or basic skills can become prohibited.

While low vision is not necessarily treatable, there are many things that can be done to help support a person with low vision.

Making sure that someone with low vision is supported in their daily life with things such as transportation, food shopping, and assistance around the home in daily activities that may be difficult with lower vision are keys to helping them thrive.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of low vision, don't hesitate to seek help.

Remember, early detection and treatment of eye related diseases can make a huge difference in preserving your vision and quality of life, even as vision loss progresses. Keeping up with annual eye examinations will help to keep your condition and the overall health of your eyes supported.
