A Parent's Guide to Spotting Vision Problems in Kids

Children's eye doctor kauai Hawaii

Your keiki don’t know what “normal” vision looks like, so you are not likely to hear them complain about their vision.

As a parent, its important to keep an eye out for issues that may arise, so that you can get their eyes checked and make sure that your children have all of the resources that they need to keep their eyes healthy as they develop and grow!

Early detection of vision issues in children makes a huge difference in their overall health, the development of their eyes, and their ability to learn in school.

Here are a few things to look out for at different ages, as your children grow:

Infants (0–12 months)

  • Eyes not tracking objects or making eye contact
  • One eye turning in or out consistently
  • Excessive tearing or sensitivity to light

Toddlers & Preschoolers (1–5 years)

  • Sitting too close to screens or holding books very close
  • Squinting, tilting head, or covering one eye
  • Clumsiness, trouble with puzzles, or avoiding coloring and drawing

School-Age Kids (6–12)

  • Complaints of headaches or tired eyes
  • Losing their place while reading or using a finger to track lines
  • Declining grades or avoiding homework
  • Difficulty seeing the board or squinting at a distance

Teens (13+)

  • Eye strain from increased screen time
  • Trouble with sports or driving
  • Not speaking up about blurry vision because they think it's normal

If you see your child struggling with any of these issues, at any age, it is important to bring them to a professional in order to test their visual acuity and the overall health of their vision.
