Properly Cleaning Your Glasses & Contact Lenses at Home

How to properly clean your eye glasses at home!

During this time of the stay-at-home order, it’s the perfect opportunity to master the technique of how to properly clean your glasses and contact lenses.

Glasses

With any pair of prescription glasses and sunglasses, you should always have your cleaning spray and cleaning cloth ready for use. (A microfiber or lint free cloth is best).

1) Spray a generous amount of the solution onto the frame and both sides of the lenses.
2) Gently wipe and clean glasses until all debris and smudges are no longer existent.

If you do NOT have cleaning spray, you could also do the following:

1) Rinse your glasses under luke-warm tap water.
2) Apply a small drop of lotion-free dishwashing liquid to each lens.
3) Clean the entirety of glasses under water for a few seconds.
4) Shake excess water off and gently wipe glasses with a lint-free cloth.

Don’t forget to wash your cleaning cloth- recommended to wash after 7-10 uses.

Contact Lenses

If you are in soft contact lenses, our preference is always the daily disposable replacement schedule. It is the cleanest and safest option for all contact lens wearing patients. We will go over different cleaning regimens for daily disposable, bi-weekly, and monthly lenses.

DAILY DISPOSABLE:

Daily disposable lenses are made to be discarded after each use. Prior to inserting them into your eyes, rinse them with your store bought contact lens solution. We like the brands Opti-Free Replenish Enhanced Comfort and Blink Revitalens Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution.

BI-WEEKLY AND MONTHLY LENSES:

When contact lenses are kept over a period of time, there can be debris and protein build up on the lenses resulting in cloudy / blurry vision along with discomfort and irritation. We recommend Clear Care Plus- a Hydrogen Peroxide based solution. Here are the instructions that you can also find in the box.

1) Remove and place each lens into the appropriately marked R/L domed lens holder. Thoroughly rinse with Clear Care plus for 5 seconds.
2) Fill the Clear Care Plus lens cup to the fill line with Clear Care and place the lens holder in the lens cup. Do not underfill or overfill.
3) Tighten the cap on the Clear Care Plus lens cup and store the lenses for at least 6 hours. Do not shake the case.
4) Lenses are ready to wear after soaking for at least 6 hours.

*NOTE: Always rinse the contacts with a multi-purpose solution after removing from the case. If you were to put them directly in your eyes after soaking in Clear Care, it will burn your eyes!

GAS PERMEABLE AND SPECIALITY CONTACT LENSES

Gas Permeable, Synergeyes, and other Hybrid lenses require specialized and specific care instructions that should always be reviewed with your eye care provider. If you are currently a specialty contact lens wearing patient and have questions about how to store, clean, and care for your lenses, please feel free to call or email us.
