When it comes to taking care of one of the most vital organs in the body, there are many misconceptions that people may have!

Here are 3 common misconceptions, when it comes to eye health and vision care:

1. "I can see fine, I don't need an eye exam"

Many people believe that eye exams are only necessary when they notice vision problems.

A comprehensive eye exam can detect more serious conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration long before symptoms appear, so we recommend getting your eyes checked at least once per year!

By the time you notice vision changes from these diseases, irreversible damage may have already occurred.

So, remember to schedule your annual eye exam to keep up with the maintenance and health of your eyes and vision!

2. "I can just get over the counter glasses from the pharmacy"

Some people think that they can skip an eye exam and just buy over the counter readers based on their prescription.

However, a prescription covers so much more than just magnification power! Your prescription includes things such as pupillary distance, cylinder and axis measurements for astigmatism, and different powers for each eye if needed.

Over the counter readers provide the same power in both lenses and don't address individual eye differences or any unique issues that you may be dealing with such as astigmatism!

So, make sure to see a professional when it comes to caring for one of the most important organs in your body!

3. “My children will tell me if something's wrong with their eyes or vision"

A common thing that some parents tend to overlook its that they assume their children will speak up if they can't see properly or have issues with their vision!

In reality, many children don't realize their vision is abnormal.

If your keiki have never seen clearly, they may assume that everyone else sees things the same way that they do!

So, make sure to ask your children if they are experiencing any eye related issues, have trouble reading in school, or are experiencing any discomfort or difficulties related to their vision!
