Interview: Shaylyn Silva

Shaylyn

Shaylyn, you joined Punzal Vision as an intern with the desire to become an Optometrist. What made you so interested in the field?

Shaylyn: I always knew I wanted to have a career in the medical field but I wasn’t sure doing what. I was able to see different careers in the hospital and then I decided to shadow a few optometrists. After observing I knew I could see myself doing that one day. I think it’s a very rewarding career and I hope I will one day be able to impact someone’s life by giving them the ability to see clearly.

A recent graduate of Kaua’i High School, what do you miss most about your years in high school?

Shaylyn: I miss being able to see my friends everyday. Also, going to sports games were always fun.

A lot of people don’t know that you dance ballet. When’s your next performance so everyone can attend?

Shaylyn: I used to dance 3-4 days a week, but now I can’t really fit it into my schedule. So unfortunately I have no upcoming performances.

You spend most of your free time with Chasen. What’s your favorite thing to do together?

Shaylyn: Chasen and I like going to the beach and staying there to watch the sunset.

What kind of food do you like and from where?

Shaylyn: I love to eat chicken Alfredo from Kauai pasta and I also love to eat steak and shrimp.

You have one sister, are you two close? What’s your favorite memory with her?

Shaylyn: My sister and I are 3 years apart so we’re kinda close in age. My favorite memory with her was going on a 300 foot free fall ride at Knott’s Berry Farm for the first time and she was super scared and when we dropped she wouldn’t stop screaming while I couldn’t stop laughing. I don’t think she’ll ever go back on it.

I can’t believe it’s 2019, what do you hope to accomplish this year?

Shaylyn: I need work on how to spend money wisely. So far, I’ve been doing pretty good on keeping track of my expenses.

You seem like a quite and shy person, what’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?

Shaylyn: The most spontaneous thing I’ve ever done was change my flight to Oahu an hour before I had to leave because we were surprised with a Christmas party! I didn’t know what to do because I wanted to stay, but I ended up getting a later flight to stay at the party. It was pretty crazy, but I’m so glad I stayed longer.

You’ve said multiple times that Tianne is your favorite person ever, can you tell us a few things that you love about her?

Shaylyn: I never said that.. nah. Tianne is my favorite person because she always makes me smile and laugh. Also she gives me hugs almost every day

🙂

What’s one piece of advice you’d like to give people who are working/going to school at the same time?

Shaylyn: I think managing time wisely is super important. There should be a time to just focus on school, a time to focus on work, and a time to study. It can get overwhelming sometimes, but I always reassure myself that this is helping me get to where I want to be in the future.
