Summer is on its way! Here are some tips to keep your eyes healthy while spending time at the beach.

Always Remove Contacts Before Getting in the Ocean

Saltwater draws moisture out of your contact lenses, making them tight and difficult to remove. This can potentially result in damage to your cornea or irritation causing a corneal infection.

Wear Goggles When Swimming

Wearing goggles may sound silly at first, but the benefits far outweigh the potential issues that could arise from not wearing them. Wearing goggles can limit the risk of eye infections caused by waterborne bacteria, irritation from floating sand particles, as well as water induced dry eye. If you do choose to swim without goggles, make sure to keep the amount of time that you swim with your eyes open to a minimum.

Wear 100% UV Protection Sunglasses

Even on cloudy days the sun is beaming down a spectrum of Ultraviolet rays and just like your skin with sunscreen, your eyes need protection too! Wearing sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection limit your risk of issues related to sun overexposure.
